Built in 1855, this guest house has 5 rooms on the second and third floors with private bath, down comforters, terry cloth robes and king or queen size beds. Each room is warm, comfortable, and decorated with light colors. Owned by Chef Mark and Dana Spring, the couple puts their years of experience working in 5-star hotels (and Mark’s training at Johnson and Wales) to good use.
Every morning for breakfast you have a choice of eating in the dining room or out on the back deck. While sitting on the back deck, you can enjoy listening to the birds sing and smell the fresh herbs growing in the side garden which Mark uses daily in his cooking. At 7:30am tea, coffee and juice are ready on the counter next to the kitchen door. Tea breads, rolls and fresh fruit are setup on the server in the corner. At 8:00am the kitchen opens for breakfast. For me, breakfast is the best meal of the day, and here, they are definitely worth taking time for.My favorite was a plate of 3 hot whole wheat Belgian waffles coated in powdered sugar, served with sliced apples, strawberries, kiwi and oranges. And of course, a fresh sprig of greens from the garden to compliment the dish.
In the evening make yourself at home in the living room with a good book, glass of wine and/or conversation with other guests.
The Marshall Slocum House is walking distance to shops, marinas and Truro Synagogue. Or a short drive to the mansions.

Just on the other side of Bannister’s Wharf on Sayer’s Wharf is an elegant fine dining restaurant.
Seated at one of the 10 tables in the main dining room, a waitress stops by with butter in a medium sized butter cup dish and a brown paper bag containing a toasty warm roll. I selected a glass of Sangiovese wine which she carried in a ¼-carafe then poured into my wine glass. A favorite appetizer is the bag of doughnuts. Each bag contains 5 doughnuts the size of munchkins, soft and chewy, filled with just the right amounts of lobster, scallops and shrimp, but a tad greasy. The main course served a mouth watering long island duck with four shrimp cooked in coconut and red curry. Not being a fan of seafood, I have to tell you, everything was absolutely delicious!
In good weather, patrons can sit outside on the deck. Tonight was very windy; therefore, the plastic was down to keep it warmer. Seating is also available in the bar.

This facility sits in the middle of Newport’s waterfront. It has everything available to the boater, yet you don’t need a boat to stay here. In front is a marina with 30 slips, power, showers, laundry, ice and fuel dock. A café is downstairs with white chairs both inside and on the patio to have your favorite beverage and snack while taking in the views. In the back are the Cooke House restaurant and other shops along the driveway out to Thames Street.
Each room is clean, air conditioned, TV, wireless, refrigerator, private bath and pet friendly.
A word of caution – the staff does everything in their power to keep the room odor free of pets and cigarettes, but if you have an allergy to pet dander and/or cigarette smoke bothers you, let them know when booking.
